Memo to self: do *not* mix odds and evens

I've got the squares for my current blanket done, and have run into a small snag. The darker squares are larger than the lighter squares. Enough so that I want to be sure that they're distributed fairly evenly throughout the blanket.

And I've finally figured out what my problem is with getting a good design. I've mixed odds and evens. This blanket had 40 squares: 5 across, 8 down. This means that the center falls on a seam, instead of within a square (for an odd by odd blanket) or where four squares meet (for an even by even blanket). And that makes it very hard for me to get an evenly distributed blanket where things don't look unbalanced.

I think I'm going to do simple diagonal rows with this one, just because anything else looks odd at that scale.

(I still want to do a random patchworky one, but that will need smaller squares to handle the distribution issue.)
